“Chocolate is a divine, celestial drink, the sweat of the stars, the vital seed, divine nectar, the drink of the gods, panacea, and universal medicine”

Geronimo Piperni, Quoted by 1796 Surgeon Antonio Lavedan

Chocolate has been linked to long life for a long time. This one single food has probably the longest lineage of any food in its primal form that we can trace back into history.  The stories, the lore, and the recorded history are all signs of something far more amazing than most ever give it credit. See as how chocolate ties into the conversation of the longest living people we currently know of, it is more proof beyond any doubt that this is the single most important food substance we have today.

There is an undeniable and almost unbelievably dense body of scientific research studies backing chocolate consumption. One such study was published in 2006 by Dutch researchers testing the alleged allure surrounding this food. 470 elderly men were divided according to how much chocolate they consumed. These men were tracked over a span of 15 years, the findings of this study concluded that the men who ate the most cacao-containing products were half as likely to die from any kind of cardiovascular disease compared to those who consumed the least amount of chocolate. The researchers theorized that the increased probability in longevity was due to drastically lowered blood pressure in chocolate eaters. Further studies have been conducted to identify the molecular structure that gives chocolate it’s magic. Harvard trained researchers coming out of the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama observed that the Kuna Indians had remarkable vigor into their later years. These people consumed high amounts of sodium, yet as they age their blood pressure appeared to never elevate in the way that Americans do. The researchers noticed that when these native peoples stopped eating their normal diet their blood pressure rose immediately. The big tip off came when the Harvard researchers noticed the Kuna diet incorporated 5 or even 6 cups of a cacao-based beverage every day. These same researchers went on to further study the correlation between cacao in improving vascular health and blood pressure. The lowering of blood pressure is believed to be due to the triggering of Nitric Oxide when someone eats chocolate. Nitric Oxide helps dilate blood vessels allowing smooth blood flow into the necessary passages, thus relaxing our entire body and thereby lowering blood pressure.

The longest “recorded” living woman in the western world, Jeanne Calment, lived to be 122. She lived from 1875 to 1997, and was considered the last living person to have met Vincent Van Gogh. Just imagine what kind of experiences this woman had to have lived through from the end of the 1800’s through the entire 1900’s!  She had seen it all by the time most of us were riding on other people’s ideas.  I imagine, at that age, it would be pretty difficult to get a whole lot past this woman in terms of theories and fluffy ideas.  This woman was not a health or fitness fanatic, although she did take up fencing at age 85, and was riding her bicycle up until 100 years of age! Some had reported that she had actually smoked cigarettes minimally from age 21 to 117.  She had been asked numerously what her secret to her remarkably long life was. She attributed her health to 3 things in particular: she drank port wine regularly, she used olive oil religiously and rubbed it all through her skin, and the last thing is that she literally consumed around 1 Kilo of chocolate per week (that’s 2.2 pounds)!!

The research studies keep flooding in about the massive benefits of cacao and dark chocolate consumption to improve all factors of health correlated with living a long life. It may seem hard to believe, due to the programming of the strict health community over the years, but the evidence is solid that regular chocolate(high cacao %) consumption improves heart health, brain health, bone health, and blood oxygen levels.

“I owe it all to art books, chocolate, and young men.”
